What is Silica Gel?

Silica gel is a synthetically produced form of silicon dioxide (SiO2) shaped into granules or beads. They contain interlocking pores that absorb and keep hold of moisture at a very high capacity, often up to 40% of its weight. This makes them an effective solution in preventing damage caused by humidity.

Being virtually harmless, the odourless granules produce no chemical reaction, meaning they can be used with close proximity to a wide range of materials. Any by-products produced are simply absorbed into its pores.

Indicating silica gel, as the name suggests, reacts with a visual indication when exposed to vapour particles. This silica type is useful when determining if the gel is no longer effective. The non-indicating silica gel however, has no physical change as a result; used inside sealed packets.

Silica Gel is used in a variety of industries from textiles to vitamins. Being non-conductive, they are well suited to electronic devices and components, preventing erosion caused by a build up of condensation.
