Premier Farnell awarded for commitment to environment.

Premier Farnell has been accepted as a member of the European Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

The accolade was given in recognition of the success of the company's sustainability strategy, its enhanced Trust Agenda and the importance it places on environmental performance across its global operations.

Initiated in 2010, the European DJSI benchmarks and recognises European companies that meet the high sustainability standards of the US based Dow Jones Sustainability Index. In the assessment, Premier Farnell achieved points for its environmental performance and reporting; which includes energy efficiency enhancements taking place across its facilities worldwide. According to Premier Farnell, scores achieved in almost all other areas were 'significantly above' the sector averages.

Steven Webb, company secretary, Premier Farnell, pictured, said: "Sustainability is a key part of our business strategy, with the Trust Agenda playing a significant role in ensuring the long term success of our business in a rapidly changing world. Being recognised by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index is an important achievement and provides us with a new way to communicate our leading sustainability performance to US and international customers and investors, who are often more familiar with this ranking than with our UK accolades."

BioBag wins IET Sustainability Innovation Award

The Institute of Engineering and Technologys (IET) Sustainability Innovation Award is the fourth accolade that Farnell has won within a period of eight months. The innovative packaging first collected the Environmental Product/Service of the Year at the UKs Sustainability Live Environment and Energy Awards in April this year. This was followed by the Green Organisations Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice and then the Contribution to Sustainability award, at Electronic Product Design Magazines e-Legacy Awards.

The packaging, developed with packaging partner Antistat, is capable of breaking down in an industrial composter, or dissolving simply in hot water, uses patented technology, exclusive to Farnell, to fully biodegrade without releasing any harmful chemicals into the environment, while offering the same level of component protection as standard static dissipative bags. The IET Innovation Awards celebrate the products, technologies and processes that lead the way in engineering innovation. Spanning 15 categories, the awards were judged by engineering experts, who recognised the depth and breadth of innovative work being carried out across all areas of engineering and technology. The IET Sustainability Innovation Award category is the most all-encompassing of all of the Innovation in Engineering Awards. Farnells biodegradable bags were recognised for the scale of the impact that they can have on present and future generations, and for the integration of the solution into the companys core business. Commenting on the win, Steven Webb, Company Secretary and General Counsel at Premier Farnell, and the person in-charge of the companys overall CSR policies, said: "As the only distributor in the electronics industry to have a comprehensive legislation portal on element14, we certainly lead the way as an innovative business. The four industry-leading awards presented to our innovative packaging over the last eight months is a testament to our sustainable commitments. As a business we have a significant focus on sustainability, we recycle over 80% of our own waste in the UK, and are working to extend that commitment and assist our customers in reducing the waste that they send to landfill.
