As a group, we are committed to actively contributing to sustainable development through environmental protection, social responsibility and economic progress. To us, this means meeting the needs of society today, while respecting the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

We work with a number of customers to provide innovative green packaging solutions and we have also pioneered and innovated a range of replenishment modules for several of our customers removing the need for external packaging during transit and reducing vast amounts of waste.

Throughout our business operations, we have been doing everything we can to minimise impact on the environment and help protect our planet for future generations. As a company we are continually sourcing and trialing the most contemporary materials and have launched a new biodegradable antistatic bag.

As static shielding bags are inherently non-recyclable and one of our largest revenue streams, we have also introduced our ECO Shield® range. ECO Shield® is a trademark of Antistat, which recognises the environmental pitfalls of the range and allows us to offer a carbon-offsetting scheme to our customers. This in turn gives a direct contribution to the environment and certificated carbon credits to our corporate clients.

The Harmless Packaging range was launched in 2008 aimed at replacing plastic packaging with compostable, like-for-like equivalents, which perform up to, if not better, than existing packaging whilst respecting the environment.

Harmless Packaging met the need for truly environmentally friendly packaging and - being truly compostable - set about addressing the apathy and confusion surrounding 'green packaging'. Harmless sought to address the complete supply chain and now offers sustainable packaging solutions to a variety of segments and markets in order to challenge our reliance on conventional plastic. Much research was conducted in to compostability, anaerobic digestion and Cyberpac was fortunate enough to receive support from In Crops Enterprise Hub, University of East Anglia.

As a business, Cygna ensures that they prolong the life cycle of computer/printer parts by dealing in used parts, sub-assemblies and complete units to major IT service suppliers in the UK and Europe.

Cygna also takes end of line products and excess stock from some of our biggest clients in the industry ensuring that at least 80% of what would have normally been discarded in waste sites is recycled safely under the WEEE Directive.

As with all businesses facing the current tough economic climate, the Group feels it is essential to highlight and improve on any inefficiencies. One such area that improvements have been made is with excessive packing materials used by our suppliers for imported products.

We found that in certain instances there was up to 50% unnecessary packing material surrounding some imported products and whilst it is essential the products arrive undamaged, we now ensure our suppliers consider that they have the balance right. We are mindful that excessive packaging is not only wasteful to the environment but has a drastic effect on transportation costs.

Our sustained investment in R&D is reflected in innovative projects and applications that provide solutions with a difference and contribute to a better society.

The Harmless product range was introduced to help reduce the world of harmful waste, harnessing our natural resources for a sustainable future. Products that wear the coveted Seedling Logo having met the stringent European Compostability Standard (EN13432) and are part of the Harmless Packaging Range.

Our BioBag solution is made using a unique formulation making them compostable to the recognised European Standard (EN13432) and ensure that no harmful chemicals are released into the environment. At this point it is believed that the new packaging will replace an estimated 3.6 million polythene bags currently used to package components that are dispatched by Farnell each year.

The BioBags have received the following awards to date:
  • 2010 Innovation Award for Sustainability
  • Green Organisation's Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice
  • Electronic Product Design e-Legacy Award 2010 for Contribution to Sustainability
  • Sustainabilitylive! Environment and Energy Awards - Environmental Product Award
